Somewhere between newborn and one, your baby becomes a whole little person.
Somewhere between the newborn days and that first birthday, something happens.
Your baby starts becoming a whole little person.
They’ve got opinions now. They know exactly who Mum is. They’ve discovered their feet, possibly a tooth or two, and they’ve developed a laugh that makes everyone in the room do absolutely ridiculous things just to hear it again.
And somewhere in amongst all of that, they learn to sit up.
Not walk. Not run. Not even necessarily crawl.
Just sit there, looking ridiculously pleased with themselves.
And that little stage? It deserves some attention of its own.
What actually is a sitter session?
A sitter session is a photoshoot for babies who have learned to sit up independently but aren’t quite at the running-away-from-me stage yet.
It’s that lovely little window when they can sit confidently, look around, play with their toes and show off all those expressions they’ve been practising.
Unlike newborn photography, where we’re often photographing those tiny details and early cuddles, sitter sessions are much more about your baby’s personality.
The cheeky grin. The serious little stare. The way they clap their hands or suddenly become fascinated by their own feet.
And because they can sit on their own, we can photograph them without needing Mum or Dad to hold them in every image.
It’s simple. It’s all about them. And honestly, this age is so much fun to photograph.

When is the best age for sitter photos?
Most babies are ready for a sitter session somewhere around 6–9 months, but there’s no magic age.
What matters more than the number of months is what your baby can actually do.
Ideally, they’re sitting independently without toppling over every few seconds, but they haven’t quite discovered how to make a speedy escape across the room yet.
Some babies reach this stage at six months. Others take a little longer, and that’s completely fine.
I always recommend waiting until your baby is sitting confidently rather than booking based on their age alone.
And if your baby is already crawling? Don’t panic. We can still capture those gorgeous expressions and little personality quirks. It just means I might get a workout too!

What happens during a sitter session at Four O Photography?
First things first, these sessions are short and sweet. Just 20 minutes!
And there’s a good reason for that. Babies this age have plenty of personality, but they don’t necessarily have the patience for a long photoshoot.
At my home studio in Hilbert, we keep things simple. A beautiful, neutral setup, a few little toys to grab their attention, and plenty of opportunities for those cheeky smiles.
I’ll guide your baby into different little positions, encourage them to play and capture all those expressions along the way.
Sometimes they’re full of giggles. Sometimes they give me the most serious little stare, as if they’re wondering who this strange woman is making ridiculous noises at them.
Both make gorgeous photos!
And if we need a quick cuddle with Mum or Dad in between? Absolutely. We work with your baby, not against them.

Why book a sitter session when you’re already planning first birthday photos?
I know what you’re thinking. If you’re already planning photos for their first birthday, do you really need another session a few months earlier?
Well, you don’t need one. But these two stages are surprisingly different.
At six to nine months, your baby is often quite happy sitting in one spot, showing off their little gummy grin, playing with their toes and giving us all those wonderful expressions.
By their first birthday? They’re usually much busier!
They might be crawling, pulling themselves up, taking their first steps or making a beeline for absolutely anything they’re not supposed to touch.
Both ages are worth remembering, but they tell two very different stories.
A sitter session captures that lovely in-between stage, before the first birthday excitement, the cake and the chaos.

A little stage worth remembering
The first year with a baby is a funny one. Some days feel incredibly long, and somehow the months disappear.
One minute you’re bringing home a tiny newborn, and the next they’re sitting in the middle of the lounge room, clapping at themselves like they’ve just won an Olympic gold medal.
That’s what I love about sitter sessions. They’re not about a big milestone or a special occasion. They’re about capturing who your baby is right now.
