ENQUIRE HERE
If you're expecting a baby and wondering when to book your newborn photographer in Perth, you're not alone. It's one of the questions I get asked most often, and honestly, the answer surprises a lot of families.
As a newborn photographer based in Hilbert, I work with families from Byford, Armadale, Mundijong, Serpentine, Bedfordale and all across Perth's south east. And the one thing I wish every expecting mum knew from the very beginning is this: book earlier than you think you need to.
Here's everything you need to know about timing your newborn session in Perth.
Newborns are best photographed in the first five to fourteen days of life.
During this short window, babies are still beautifully sleepy, naturally curled into those gorgeous tucked positions they held in the womb, and content to be gently settled and held during a session. After around two to three weeks, babies become more alert, harder to settle, and those dreamy newborn poses become much more difficult to achieve.
This tiny window moves incredibly fast. One week you have a sleepy, curled newborn and the next week everything has changed. This is exactly why booking in advance is so important.
The Golden Window for Newborn Photography
When Should You Actually Book?
The ideal time to book your newborn session in Perth is during your second trimester, around 20 to 30 weeks pregnant.
I know that might feel early, especially when you have so much else to think about. But here's why it matters:
Calendars fill up fast. Newborn photographers, especially those with limited availability like myself, book out weeks and sometimes months in advance. Popular due date windows like spring and summer can fill up very quickly. Booking early means your due date is reserved and your spot is secured.
It removes one thing from your to-do list. Those final weeks of pregnancy are exhausting. The nursery, the hospital bag, the car seat, the last thing you want to be doing at 37 weeks is scrambling to find a photographer with availability. Booking in your second trimester means it's done, it's organised, and you can relax.
We stay flexible around your actual due date. Booking early doesn't mean committing to an exact date. Once your baby arrives, we simply confirm your session date based on when bub actually comes. If you're early, we adjust. If you're late, we adjust. The flexibility is built in.
What Happens After Baby Arrives?
Once your little one makes their arrival, you simply send me a message to let me know. From there, we'll lock in your session date, ideally once your little one makes their arrival, you simply

In those early days you'll have enough on your plate without having to organise a lot of logistics. My sessions at my Hilbert studio are designed to take the pressure completely off you. I handle everything, the wraps, the warmth, the styling, the guidance. Your only job is to show up and hold your baby.
What If My Baby Has Already Arrived?
If you're reading this and your baby is already here, please don't panic. It's always worth reaching out, even if you think it might be too late.
I keep a small number of flexible spots specifically for new arrivals and last-minute enquiries. If your baby is still within the newborn window, there's a good chance we can make something work. Send me a message and we'll figure it out together.
And if your baby is a little older, beyond three to four weeks, lifestyle sessions focusing on connection, cuddles, and family moments can still create incredibly beautiful images. The style is simply adapted to where your baby is at.
How Far in Advance Do Perth Families Typically Book?
Most families who contact me are between 25 and 32 weeks pregnant. This tends to be the sweet spot, far enough along that the pregnancy feels real and exciting, but with plenty of time to secure a spot before their due date arrives.
Families due in peak periods, particularly October through January, often find that popular Perth photographers fill up even earlier. If you're due in spring or early summer, I'd encourage you to reach out as soon as possible.
A Note on Flexibility and Due Dates
Babies don't always arrive on schedule and that's completely okay. I always build buffer time around due dates to account for early arrivals, late arrivals, and everything in between.
When you book with Four O Photography, you're not locked into a specific date months in advance. You're simply securing your place in my calendar so that when your baby arrives, we can move quickly and get your session booked within that precious early window.
